Registry Member Eugene (Gene) Doris Honored with ECAC Distinguished Service Award

We are proud to share that Registry Member Eugene “Gene” Doris has been recognized with the 2025 ECAC Distinguished Service to Intercollegiate Athletics Award. This prestigious honor celebrates Gene’s exceptional five-decade career in college athletics—a journey marked by visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) created the Distinguished Service Award in 2024 to recognize individuals whose lifelong contributions have made a significant and enduring mark on intercollegiate athletics. Gene Doris is a fitting recipient of this recognition, having served as Director of Athletics at Fairfield University for 24 years, following his tenure in the same role at Marist College. Earlier in his career, he also coached under the legendary Digger Phelps at Fordham University during a historic season that saw the Rams reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Beyond his leadership in athletics departments, Gene has continued to shape the field as an Adjunct Professor of Athletics Administration and as a respected consultant, helping institutions navigate the evolving collegiate athletics landscape.

As part of the award, ECAC Commissioner Dan Coonan sat down with Gene for an in-depth video interview, in which he reflects on his career, the state of college athletics today, and his advice for the next generation of athletic leaders.

The Registry congratulates Gene Doris on this well-earned recognition and applauds his lifelong service to collegiate athletics. We are honored to count him among our distinguished members.
