REGISTRY 2023.5 REFLECTIONS

Article by: Dr. Bryan Carlson,
President, The Registry

As we reflect upon the Registry’s first six months of 2023, there are three different themes that immediately come to mind:

First, we continue to marvel at our own visibility amongst the nation’s colleges and universities. In response to queries generated through our own website, we routinely ask how did you hear about the Registry? All of the responses tend to reinforce a belief that the Registry’s visibility within the Academy is ubiquitous. But there is one recurrent response that always takes our team over the moon: “Everybody knows about the Registry.” While it has taken us a full thirty years to reach this level of visibility, right now there is a sense that our penetration of the higher education sector and our growth are actually accelerating.

Second, which is perhaps a factor helping to trigger the acceleration of our growth, is that the Registry has become part of the Academy’s DNA. Our business model has made this happen, especially our commitment to generate interim candidate pools at no cost or incurred obligation for the Academy. This commitment by the Registry has made it possible to become more than a partner for the Academy, but instead to function on an integral basis for our college and university clients. What is more, this commitment is sustained even if we don’t immediately achieve an interim placement. As a result, institutions do not forget about the Registry—how can they, now that we have become part of their DNA?

Third, when the Registry appears as a sponsor at major higher education conferences, our burgeoning visibility is always reaffirmed. This year I had an opportunity to briefly participate in the ACE Search Roundtable. Through the years I have always introduced myself as the “Odd Duck.” In the early years this was an attempt to justify our membership in this group because we have never been a traditional search firm. This year, it dawned on me that my “Odd Duck” self-introduction had a different impact. The Registry in so many ways has now become a disrupter. We often compete head-on with firms that are angling for the permanent search. Increasingly, a Registry Interim has become the solution of choice for the Academy.

I will stop right at this point because we cannot predict where the Registry’s path of disruption will take us and how much more it will penetrate the DNA of the Academy—but I don’t think we will need to wait another 30 years to learn the outcome!
